How you could help to protect the winter and visit Lapland in ecofriendly way?
If you want to have a really sustainable summer holiday and stay in the eco-friendly way in Finland, this is the place!
- Both Koskikara and Napakettu are planned and built with the mindset that the life time of the house will be long. Houses are made of thick log, strong and high enough foundation to avoid wet structures, plenty of insulation in the roof. Insulation materials are wood-based (except in the foundation).
- Materials are mainly from Finland. Furniture is mainly made of Finnish birch (by myself). Rubbish has been recycled in the construction phase.
- Both Koskikara and Napakettu are warmed by geothermic energy and they are using ecofriendly electricity.
- Both chalets are next to ski tracks. You don't need to use car to reach ski slopes either, there is a skibus from the village to the resort.
- Koskikara is almost in the center of the village, shops, restaurants etc are well within walking distance. Napakettu is a bit further, about three kilometers from the center. But in Napakettu you have e.g. bicycles available free of charge. In the winter time you can utilise kicksleds, which are very convenient way to move especially if the roads are slippery. Both Napakettu and Koskikara have kicksleds available free of charge.
- Both chalets have plenty of equipment to support outdoor activities. Napakettu has even canoe which you you move without car by canoe cart or bicycle trailer e.g. to Kesänki lake ( about 1 km).
- Both chalets have waste recycling (rare exception in Ylläs area). There are a compost and boxes for different materials in "our waste station." We strongly recommend to utilise them eventhough the compost stop working in the arctic winter.
- Napakettu has a charging station for electric cars. If you stay in Koskikara, please utilise charging station in Jounin kauppa ( Sannanrannantie 3 95970 Äkäslompolo)
How you could help to protect the winter and visit Lapland in ecofriendly way?
- Use railway if possible. The nearest railway station is in Kolari, about 40 km away and there is always a bus from the train to Äkäslompolo. Train to Rovaniemi is also a relevant option.
- A bus is also an option to reach Lapland.
- If you come via Kittilä airport there is an airport bus from Kittilä to Ylläs, you will save money and nature using that instead of taxi.
- Prefer Ylläs area services instead of travelling further way like to Levi ;) You can find out large selection of services here.
- Prefer non-motored activities over the looong skido safaris.
- Taste local food like fish, almond potatoes ("puikulaperunat"), reindeer elk, wild berries etc. If you prefer vegan food, you can find it in Jolie Lounge&Cafe (Sivulantie 4, Äkäslompolo, just short walk from Koskikara).
- In the chalets:
- Stay in sauna as long as you want but don't warm sauna longer or warmer than you need.
- Use water moderately.
- Let the windows stay closed. There is an air condition system which takes care of ventilation.
- Recycle and minimize the waste. The waste is hauled a long way from Äkäslompolo, the less the better!
If you want to have a really sustainable summer holiday and stay in the eco-friendly way in Finland, this is the place!
- Located on the Vääräsaari island in the heart of Etelä-Konnevesi lake, surrounded by private nature protection area and National park, you can feel to be part of the Finnish nature.
- The hut and the new sauna building are made of local logwood. There is solar electricity available and if you want to warm up the hut or sauna, there is hand cut (by chainsaw & Fiskars axe) wood available.
- To reach the hut no motor boat is available, preferred way is by canoe or rowing boat, certainly sustainable way to travel!
